May 16, 1867, Eureka, Newark, v. Irvington, NJ, at Irvington: “When the ‘boys in blue’—the Eurekas donning their new uniform on the occasion, viz. dark blue pants, light blue checked shirts with light blue caps with coral trimmings—took their place in the field, they presented a very handsome appearance, the blue forming a pretty contrast to the bright green of the turf.” From the New York Clipper, May 18, 1867. Team genealogy: Eureka, Newark, 1860-1868
Eureka was formed in Newark, NJ, before the 1860 season and subsequently joined the National Association of Base Ball Players (NABBP), baseball’s first organization operating 1857-1870. Eureka chose to remain amateur with the era of open professionalism approaching and subsequently played their last competitive games in 1868.
