Photo B
Dated about 1867. Two photos of the same club from different years, or more likely, different nines of the same club from the same year. According to an auction site, the lower photo had a hand-written caption on the back of the mount, stating the year as “about 1867” and that the photo was of “Grandfather’s base ball team/He was about 20 yrs of age/Albert Steiner – 3rd from left – outfielder + manager/Gentleman’s baseball team in Brooklyn before the game became a national affair.” Players were photographed wearing a white or light-colored coat and dark pants. The cap was dark with white ribbing and a star on top. Team identification of Mohawk and dates that Steiner played for Mohawk from Marshall D. Wright, The National Association Of Base Ball Players, 1857-1870 (2000). Wright does not list years other than 1866 and 1867 for the Mohawk team. Info on hand-written caption from Robert Edward Auctions, and sent to the author by Jeff Anderson.
