April 1870: “[The Maryland] uniform will be white flannel shirts, pants and caps, with blue cording and blue stockings.” From the New York Clipper, April 23, 1870. Research from Brian McKenna.

April 1870: “New nickname of ‘Blue Stockings’ in honor of the club’s white and blue uniforms.” From Peter Morris and others, Base Ball Pioneers, 1850-1870 (2012), possibly referencing the New York Clipper, Apr 23, 1870.


Team Genealogy: Maryland, Baltimore 1860-1873
Maryland was formed in Baltimore, MD, in 1860. They were members of the National Association of Base Ball Players (NABBP) from 1867 to 1870. The NABBP was the first baseball organization, operating 1857-1870. Maryland joined the National Association (NA) in 1873. The NA was baseball’s first league, operating 1871-1875. Maryland played sporadically during the 1873 season before folding.
