April 1876: “The first base ball game of the season will be played at half past two o’clock next Sunday afternoon [April 16, 1876] at Union Park, Allegheny, by the Xantha and Allegheny clubs. Both clubs will appear in new uniforms. The suits of the former club consists of gray caps, pants and shirts, with red trimmings and red stockings and belts.” From the Pittsburgh Daily Post, April 10, 1876. Research from Ed Morton.


Team genealogy: Xantha, Pittsburgh, 1865-1870s
Xantha originating in 1865 as a boating club situated in Allegheny City, PA (now known as Pittsburgh’s North Side). The Xantha Club fielded one of the top amateur baseball teams in Western PA during the early to mid-1870s. Information from Andy Terrick, submitted December 18, 2017.
