Dated 1884. A newspaper description from this year matched the uniform shown in this photo. The players were a white uniform with red stockings, belts and lettering. Image scan from T. Scott Brandon and Mark Fimoff, SABR 19th-century Pictorial Committee.
Dated 1884. Detail view of photo A. Detail view shows a shield bib on the front of the shirt. It is possible the lettering on the shirt was hand cut.
Dated 1884. Another detail view of photo A. Detail view shows players wearing a colored cap, most likely red. A majority, but not all, of the caps had a white braid above the bill.
Written documentation on this uniform:
April 1884: “The uniforms of the new Lancaster nine have arrived in this city and one suit is on exhibition in the window of Goft & Winters, on North Queen Street. The pantaloons and shirts are of white with bright red belts and stockings and white caps trimmed with red. The shirt has a shield with the letters ‘Lanc’ across the breast.” From the Lancaster Intelligencer, April 10, 1884. Research from Bob Porter. Note, the team photo from this year showed the players wearing a colored cap, most likely red, not a white cap as reported here.
