Written documentation on this uniform:
April 1885: “The Washingtons have ordered new uniforms from Wright & Ditson of this city [Boston]. They are to be of a brownish color and trimmed with royal blue, with stockings and belts to match. On the breast, in blue, will be the letter W.” From the Boston Globe, April 24, 1885. Research from Ed Morton.

1885, referenced in February 1886: “The Nationals will have two different styles of uniforms next season [1886], one of white and red, like last year [in 1885], and another of gray and red, like that worn by the Providences.” From the Washington (DC) Sunday Herald, February 28, 1886. Research from Don Stokes. This report does not match the Boston Globe report above.

1885, referenced in March 1886: “Inasmuch as the suit worn by the Nationals last year [1885] was similar to that of the Chicagos, it has been decided to have two different uniforms for the Washington nine during the coming campaign [1886]. When they play the Chicagos and other clubs addicted to white suits, they will don a gray uniform.” From the Pittsburgh Evening Penny Press, March 4, 1886. Research from Ed Morton.
