February 1893: “The contract for the Montgomerys’ new uniform has been awarded to a well-known establishment. The shirt and pants will be white and the cap, belt and stockings cardinal red. The sweater will be red, too.” From The Sporting Life, February 25, 1893. Research from Chuck McGill.

April 1893: “Most teams in the Southern League have already received one or more nickname. […] The Montgomery boys are called Colts.” From The Sporting Life, April 15, 1893.

Montgomery joined the Southern League (SL) in 1892 when the league reformed. The reorganized SL operated between 1892 and 1896 and folded after the 1896 season.
