Photo A

Dated 1894. Collage of player portraits published before the start of the 1895 season. Based on the appearance of player Dewald, a creation date of April 1894 to mid-May 1894 can be suggested for the collage. Dewald did not play for Cleveland in regular season games in 1894 and was subsequently signed by Erie of the Eastern League by mid-May 1894. The remaining portraits were taken before 1894, the majority of which were made in 1892 or 1893. See further explanations below.

Top row, from left: C Dewald (Cle PL 90, Erie EL 94), C Young (NL 90-98, AL 09, 10, 11), N Cuppy (92-98), J O’Connor (92-98) and J McAleer (89, 91-98, PL 90, AL 01). Second row: C Childs (91-98), C McGarr (93-96), P Tebeau (89, 91-98, PL 90), E McKean (AA 87, 88, NL 89-98) and C Fisher (Cle NL 93, 94, Cin NL 94). Bottom row: J Virtue (90-94), J Clarkson (92-94), B Ewing (93, 94), C Zimmer (AA 87, 88, NL 89-99) and J Burkett (91-98). Years with team from baseball-reference.com. Image scan and player IDs from the Spalding Base Ball Guide, 1895. Dewald transaction info from The Sporting Life, May 19, 1894.
